John Meissner CADC, has joined the Behavioral Health team at American Indian Health Services of Chicago. John has worked as a counselor for twenty seven years in the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse field. He brings a wealth of professional and personal experience to his role as substance abuse counselor. His background includes work with adults, adolescents and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings. His clinical approach is one of acceptance and motivation while maintaining high expectations for positive outcomes. American Indian Health Service of Chicago (AIHSC) is pleased to announce a monthly lecture series on Behavioral Health issues. On June 19th from 12-1 Norma Robertson will give a presentation on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Please bring your lunch and attend this informative session at AIHSC 4081 N. Broadway, Chicago , 60613. Summer Volunteering at American Indian Center: Got some time on your hands this summer? We'd love to have you at AIC!
Volunteer opportunities:
1. Summer Lunch programs for community Seniors and Youth: help prepare nutritious lunches for our seniors and summer school youth programs. Our new cook could use some help cutting up veggies, making sandwiches, packing healthy snacks, serving the Elders, keeping our kitchen clean. Monday through Friday, anytime between 10am - 2pm.
2. Food Pantry for the Needy helps feed over 200 families every month. Benefits: satisfaction for providing much needed food and clothing to appreciative people.
Volunteers needed - Wednesdays from noon to 4pm to help unload donated food from the trucks, stock the pantry shelves, and make food bags.
Thursdays, 9am - 3pm: Help distribute food to clients, customer service.

A memorial and Celebration of Life feast for Gramma Peggy Desjarlait will be held at the American Indian Center 1630 W. Wilson Ave. Chicago, IL Tuesday, June 24th, at 6:00 pm
As requested by Peggy Ann Desjarlait (Peggy's Daughter) and granddaughter Maria, Gramma Peggy will be brought back to her Chicago family. They hope you will be able to be with them. Gramma Peggy will be missed many.
If you would like to bring a dish to share for the feast you are welcome to.

Pink Shawl Project: Native Women's Health Awareness Circle Comes to Chicago!
The Pink Shawl Project was begun in Michigan by Native Women to raise awareness of breast cancer & breast health for all American Indian women. The project is spreading nation wide, and it is now coming to Chicago!
Pink Shawls are made & worn at Pow wows; Pink Ribbons are added to shawls and shirts; Pink Shawl and Pink Ribbon making circles are formed so Native women can share stories and support our journeys into health.
First General Pink Shawl Meeting: Wednesday, June 18, 1pm at AIC. Join Florence Dunham, Sharon Skulnick and others make history as this exciting Native Women's health initiative is born in the Chicago community. Pink ribbons will be made!
First Pink Shawl Program: Wednesday, July 16 - Pink Ribbon Making Circle and Breast Health/Women's Health Seminars (to be held at both AIC and AIHS). Details to come.

P.O.V: Election Day
This program combines 12 stories, shot simultaneously on November 2, 2004 from dawn until long past midnight, into one. Factory workers, ex-felons, harried moms, Native American activists, and diligent poll watchers from South Dakota to Florida take the process of democracy into their own hands. An entertaining, inspiring, and sometimes unsettling tapestry of citizens determined on one fateful day to make their votes count.
All Nations Breath of Life Smoking Cessation Facilitator Training
Training Date: Saturday, July 13, 1pm - 6pm, American Indian Center.
ANBL Smoking Cessation Program: begins Thursday, July 17, 6:30pm, every Thursday evening for 8 weeks.
All Nations Breath of Life is a Native American oriented smoking cessation program. It will be offered to the Native Community for those who wish to quit recreational smoking. It utilizes friend, family, community and cultural support, as well as medical support when needed.
Requirements to become an ANBL facilitator: Native American, at least 18 years old, experience in delivering human services or leading groups; or who feel they can lead a group with training; completion of the one day training, acceptance as a "facilitator-in-training" during the first 8 week ANBL program, and passing the evaluation at end of the 8 week program.

The All nations Breath of Life program is a partnership between the American Indian Center, American Indian Health Service, and University of Kansas Public Health.
Want to quit smoking? Want to think about quitting smoking? The All Nations Breath of Life Smoking Cessation Program is Just for You!
All Nations Breath of Life is an 8 week supportive program designed for Native Americans who wish to quit smoking recreationally. It provides friend, family, community and cultural support. It also provides trained Native facilitators, as well as the newest medication assistance if desired.
ANBL addresses issues of tobacco use that are unique to American Indians. This program will support cultural areas such as the sacredness of Tobacco as a medicine plant, while dealing with the reality of recreational tobacco addiction.
ANBL Program begins Thursday, July 17, 6:30 pm at the American Indian Center. It will meet every Thursday evening for 8 weeks.
