Reports To: The staff accountant reports to the Associate Director and AIC Executive Director and staffs the financial committee meetings.

Location: Chicago, Illinois
Type: Full Time – exempt
Salary Range: $30,000 annually, no health insurance

Organizational Overview: The American Indian Center (AIC) of Chicago, governed by a community-elected Board of Directors, has been a visible symbol of Chicago’s Native American community for 50 years, making it the oldest urban American Indian Center in the United States. The AIC is committed to promoting the well-being, education, and economic development of this Native American community, while simultaneously completing our mission to “…create bonds of understanding and communication…” by advancing ideals of tolerance and diversity. Through the years the AIC has helped thousands of Native Americans from around the country make a successful transition into urban life, while helping to retain and enrich their Native cultural heritage. Position Summary The Staff accountant is responsible for monthly and quarterly financial reports Maintain asset schedule and support capital campaign Assist with Administration of projects and foundation funding Assists with annual audit, and all organizational forms associated with end of the year. Assists with special financial assignments and reporting needs Creates and updates monthly board reports (A/P, A/R, budget) Responsible for cutting checks in a prioritized fashion approved by Executive Director

Qualifications: The staff accountant should possess:

1. Baccalaureate or higher degree
2. Successful experience in financial/accounting procedures, including major campaigns, preferably in non-profits.
3. Ability to manage complex responsibilities
4. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and constituents
5. Ability to train, supervise, inspire and lead a professional team
6. Excellent and detailed data entry skills
7. Personal characteristics associated with successful staff accountant including sound judgment, a high level of energy, demonstrated initiative and the discipline to follow through, appropriate professional appearance, ability to engage others and to network, especially with major gift donors, a good sense of humor and attitude and personality to deal effectively with staff members, key volunteers and American Indian Center constituents.
